Step by Step
We were first approached by the client in January of 2022 to help provide a rainwater harvesting solution for their garden. Due to the size and shape of the client’s garden and house, using a large water tank or water butt was not possible, instead a dual water butt solution was proposed. This dual water butt setup allowed the client to harvest the amount of water they required, without compromising on space.
Due to the position of the water butts and the shape of the house, a connection system was required in order to keep the two water butts linked. The shape of the house did not permit a simple connection hose or pipe setup, instead a custom pipe system was devised so that it would sit flush against the exterior wall of the house. This pipe system also allows the client the option of covering the pipes in the future, if they wish to do so.
In this case, every step of the process was designed with a complete solution in mind, we supplied everything the customer needed to make the process of achieving their required solution as easy and straightforward as possible.
Gutters naturally accumulate debris from trees, such as leaves and twigs, as well as moss, insects, and more. Similarly, wind can also blow other detritus into the gutters, presenting further problems. In this case the client wanted to make sure that any water entering their water butts was filtered prior to entering them, this is advantageous for numerous reasons. First of all, anything entering the water butts other than water can be a cause of contamination, and while many garden plants are very hardy, it’s best to supply them with water which is clean as naturally possible. Secondly, water can stagnate over time, not only causing problems for your plants, but also causing an unpleasant smell which can linger.
The Gutter Mate Diverter & Filter helps to prevent the water from becoming polluted with foreign objects, while the fine mesh helps to filter even further, keeping small insects from reaching the water butts and laying their eggs.
One of the most useful features of the Gutter Mate Diverter & Filter is that not only is it easy to install, it’s also incredibly easy to clean. It’s simply a case of removing the filter basket and disposing of the contents within.
The shape of these water butts made it an easy task to situate them against the exterior wall of the house, because they were flat on all sides they could sit flush. These water butts also have three possible outlets, making the options for placing them much easier. Subsequently, it also means that there is the option to connect multiple water butts together, which we did in this case.
The easy access lid on the top also opens up the possibility for refilling watering cans or buckets straight from the top, rather than using the external tap.
This pump was used in this case to transfer water automatically from one water butt to another when empty, which is detected by the float switch control. The pump is powered via an 11-metre-long mains cable, making it easy to connect to an outdoor or indoor mains input.
While the pump in this scenario was used for transferring between water butts, it’s equally as easy to change the setup so that it sends water to a garden hose or sprinkler, reaching the correct pressure to be effective.
